Someone will remember us // I say // even in another time
Sappho, fragment 147

Greece is a country and people perpetually caught in the middle of global affairs and perpetually forgotten about by their surrounding political-economic powerhouses except to vacation on their beaches and tour their ancient ruins. The people of Greece continue to survive and stay steady in their traditions and history, and Greek queer and youth culture is its own unique blend of global modernity, Greek steadfastness, and anarchical future-building. So much of the land was a mixture of ancient ruins, upheavals of the recent past, and gritty building for a world-yet-to-come. While Greece is often imagined by tourists as a place only of ancient marble ruins, sunny Santorini rooftops, and fresh seafood, I wanted to photograph other scenes of Greek life that often are forgotten about. I am grateful for the Greek connections I made in Skala Eresos and Athens that showed how far a little kindness and curiosity can go. These are places I hope to continually return to and deepen those connections made.

Photos from Greece in May 2026, taken primarily on the island of Lesvos and the city of Athens. This photo trip was sponsored in large part by the Odyssey Travel Grant from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
