About

Benjamin Baker is an interdisciplinary artist focusing on photography and moving image who has resided in and worked out of Chicago, USA, since 2018. He received welding training and an AWS certification from Chicago Women in Trades in 2023. Benjamin is currently a BFA candidate at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a member of the Association of Moving Image Archivists.
His ongoing work in audiovisual and paper archives through the Video Data Bank, Media Burn Archive, the SAIC Flaxman Library Special Collections, and freelance projects continually inspire him to find ways to convey meaning, context, and historicity to collections of the mundane and discarded. Through both his archival and photographic work, Benjamine seeks to commune with the ghosts of landscapes and locations both in the Americas and abroad, in hopes they can provide some clarification on the present and guidance for the future.
While Benjamin's archival work is also one of his passions, outside of work he can be found regularly at one of Chicago's independent cinemas, meandering through record shops and thrift stores to curate his family's CD collection, taking photos of friends, or making an entire soup from scratch.
